This class is for adults who are interested in botanical dye processes. Participants will be guided through the mordanting process which is a simple chemical transaction that allows the botanical pigment to adhere to the fiber being dyed. Each participant will get a few items of silk and wool to submerge in pre-prepared dye baths. While the fibers are absorbing their colors we will discuss aspects of how and what to harvest, how to create vibrant dye baths, and how to prepare, mordant and dye various fibers on your own.

This workshop will be less hands-on and more informational so is open for adults only (in-arms babies are welcome). The goal of this workshop is for participants to take home some beautiful botanically dyed fibers and feel empowered to repeat these processes at home.

***Please bring a lunch with you to the workshop.

About Your Instructors:

Juniper Dwight is a Montessori teacher who lives and works in Ojai. She has been dabbling with natural dye processes as a hobby for many years. Not a fastidious person by nature, she has learned mostly by lots of trial and error and experimentation. She particularly loves the way the act of botanical dying deepens her awareness of natural landscapes and their resources.

Alena Steen is a local farmer and educator who lives just outside of Ojai. She and her partner own and operate Night Heron Farm, growing organic cut flowers and herbal medicine for two farmers markets in Ojai. Alena is also an avid amateur botanist and delights in any activity that brings her into relationship with the growing world.
